Volunteer Teaching Abroad

Make a positive impact on the lives of students in developing nations

Take part in a Projects Abroad Teaching Project to help children access the education they need for a brighter future.

We know that education is essential for breaking down the barriers of poverty and inequality. We see it every day on our Teaching Projects abroad. By joining us as a volunteer, you’ll be able to make this change happen yourself.

You can volunteer in primary schools, high schools, or universities in a developing country, working with local teachers as a teaching assistant. This means you’ll be in real classrooms, contributing to lessons and working closely with children and young people. If there’s a subject you’re really passionate about, let us know and we can make sure you’re in the right teaching department for you.

If you’re considering a future as a teacher or want to learn more about global education, these projects will help you develop the skills you need.

Is a Teaching Project abroad right for me?

If you want a career in teaching or education these are the right projects for you. We have a wide range of options to suit different levels of experience and different interests.

If you’re thinking about applying for a teaching qualification, these projects will help you build a strong CV and perform well in interviews.

You don’t need a TEFL qualification or teaching experience or the local language. All you need as a volunteer abroad teaching English to have an impact on your students, is good English and a passion for education.

You’ll be well supported by local experts as well as Projects Abroad staff during your project. You’ll be volunteering alongside others who share your interests and passion for teaching.

If you're interested in teaching, but want a project where you work on other issues in a community, you may be interested in our Youth Development and Social Work Projects. Read our full list of projects for volunteering abroad.

What will I gain from a volunteer teaching opportunity abroad?

By getting teaching work experience abroad with us, you’ll get the skills you need to fulfill your ambitions, while giving back to a community that needs help.

Here are just some of the benefits that our previous volunteers talk about:

  • Soft skills like teamwork, communication, leadership, resilience, organising, planning, and time management.
  • Teaching experience in a real classroom environment.
  • The ability to work and empathise with people of different cultures and backgrounds, helping to develop a ‘global mindset’.
  • Confidence from pushing past your comfort zone.

All of the above will enhance your CV, UCAS applications, and your personal development.

Why do these projects matter?

We believe that education is essential so that young people to move beyond the barriers of poverty and disadvantage. The schools we support are often stretched to the limit of their resources. As a volunteer, you’ll provide extra support and enthusiasm where it’s really needed.

How are Projects Abroad’s Teaching Projects different?

At Projects Abroad, our first aim is to help the communities we work in. Your volunteering project will be ethical, well supported and part of a better future.

Be fully supported by staff

In each project, there is a full-time member of staff whose job it is to support our volunteers. We don’t expect our volunteers to be qualified teachers or experts in education. On these projects, you’ll work alongside trained teachers from the local community and Projects Abroad staff. They will help you plan your work and be on hand to advise you as and when you need help.

A targeted approach

We are about a lot more than pitching up and pitching in. We stand apart from other volunteering projects, as we are guided by annual reviews and thorough needs assessments, which are brought together in our Management Plans. For us, bringing this level of professional strategic thinking to each project is a crucial part of making sure that our volunteers and the communities we serve both get the outcomes they need.
